SPARSITY: drawings from the road

A new exhibit by Steve Fasan

These drawings are departure from my usual practice of photography based work. They find connection and resonance with the visually sparse, Australian landscape.

The outback landscape and i’ts contradictions have been a formidable preoccupation and inspirational source for my artmaking over the last few years.

These are simple, economic drawings of roadside structures observed while driving through the the Great central Road, The Pilbara, Cape York and The Kimberley.

I do not know what they mean. Ergo they have no meaning. they are simply what they are. make of them what you will.

LAST DAYS…EXHIBITION CLOSING ON THE 23RD OF DECEMBER

“It is not art in the professionalized sense about which I care, but that which is created sacredly, as a result of a deep inner experience, with all of oneself, and that becomes ‘art’ in time.”

-Alfred Stieglitz

(b. 1979, Australia) Currently lives and works in Sydney, Australia   | EDUCATION 2000 Bachelor of Visual Arts (Ceramics Major), Sydney College of the Arts, Rozelle

Passionate about art from a young age, Australian based artist, Natalie Uhrik has always been pulled by her creative side, dabbling in various mediums including film and ceramics as a means of expressing her inner self.

When not elbow deep in paint, Natalie is busy being a mother to her daughters. She holds a Bachelor of Visual Arts degree from Sydney College of the Arts and began focussing on her painting career in January 2020 after many years of working in the hospitality industry running a successful cafe and focusing on her family life. She now sells work internationally and has a strong presence in the Australian art market.

The principal theme in Natalie's work is nature and landscapes. She often revisits past trips taken when painting, both Australian and abroad. With a range of painting techniques, line, texture and colour, her pieces mimic the elements of nature and create a kind of ambience.

Natalie also explores notions of spirituality, seeking meaning through connections to nature and art and the idea that there is something bigger than ourselves - the divine energy. It is a universal human experience—something that touches us all.

Her paintings are a reflection of her, then current, state-of-mind, right down to the colours, strokes, and wisdom gained whilst creating. They are a process of spiritual discovery and how much has manifested in her life as a result.

Music plays a large role in how she communicates form onto canvas, painting from a deep subconscious; trusting her intuition and ‘letting go’. These free-flowing layers of colour and spontaneous movements create feelings of calm, gratitude, contentment, optimism and acceptance.
